Who Should Attend:
You are a Singapore Public Officer who is an individual contributor/ oversees individual contributors/ a team of individual contributors/ managers/ multiple teams. You are interested in understanding systems at a more advanced level, its impact on organisations, and how better results can be created through seeing the connections among systemic components. **Pre-Requisite: You should have attended the Basic Systems Thinking (using 3Quest™) before attending this programme.
Programme Overview

This is an Advanced programme that builds on the Basic Systems Thinking Using 3QueST™ workshop. You would have been familiar with The 3 Questions That Systems Thinkers Ask (3QueST™) and the basic tools shared in the Basic programme.


In this advanced programme, we will explore more advanced strategies.  Previously, you have learnt some basic tools to anticipate and deal with unintended consequences.  In this programme, you will learn how to recognise the following 4 common types of unintended consequences and explore the corresponding strategies to deal with each.

  • Fixes That Fail
  • Shifting The Burden
  • Eroding Goals
  • Escalation


You will also learn that a period of sustained success can lead to new challenges, layering on what you have learnt about Success Loops previously. Following are some archetypes that reflect the kinds of challenges we face today even as our economy grows! We will discuss strategies to address these kinds of challenges.

  • Tragedy Of The Commons
  • Success To The Successful


Learning Methodology: The format of the Advanced course is similar to that of the introductory course.  It is a blend of videos and Zoom sessions.

  • Understand Systems Archetypes and how they occur frequently in our lives and work
  • Use Of Systems Archetypes To Answer The 3 Questions Systems Thinkers Ask (3Quest™)
  • Identify the patterns these Systems Archetypes create over time and the mental models driving them.
  • Learn strategies to deal with Systems Archetypes by using Challenge Questions

Jacob Lee

Dr. Jacob Lee is the Principal Consultant of Hedgehog Consulting and holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was previously an Associate Professor of Teaching at the Singapore Management University and before that, he taught at the National University of Singapore. He has left academia and is actively engaged in helping organisations develop their capacities in the disciplines of the Learning Organisation including Systems Thinking and Mental Models. Dr. Lee has been a facilitator, consultant, and trainer to many organisations in the Public Service. Dr. Lee currently conducts two workshops at the Civil Service College: Basic Systems Thinking and Advanced Systems Thinking.
