Navigating Complexity using Advanced Facilitation Tools

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

• Recognise anthro-complexity, or complexity as it is experienced in human systems, and why complex problems require a different approach to facilitation.
• Develop an applied understanding of the Cynefin® framework, and the importance of “bounded applicability” (constraints) to identify the right approaches to dealing with issues which are complex, as opposed to ordered.
• Differentiate between Traditional and Complex facilitation, and the distinct facilitator mandates, roles and approaches for each.
• Apply principles of complexity to design sessions that are complexity-fit.
• Identify a complex facilitation need and build on your understanding of complex systems principles to select the appropriate facilitation approach, structure and roles.
• Experiment with creating powerful prompting questions that act as catalysts for rich sensemaking and engagement
• Examine why and how the design fundamentals like context, multiple perspectives, and descriptive self-awareness support complex facilitation.
• Orient themselves in the role and behaviour of complex facilitation, shifting from control and management to designing for emergence, allowing outcomes to be owned by the group.
